Three weeks ago I ordered a new Haut 9'6 longboard. It's a great experience to order a custom surfboard, they build it for your height and your shape and you get to pick the glass job and the air brushed design. I was in the Haut shop 5 weeks ago and my friend Paul bought a really nice 9' board. I had to admit my raw jealousy and just go buy one so I wouldn't continue to covet Paul's board. I have been surfing a 9' Haut epoxy board for some time but I realized that the epoxy boards have too much flotation and don't slice the wave as nicely as a traditional longboard.

<img src="http://cfry.net/pics/board_nose1_small.JPG"
<img src="http://cfry.net/pics/board_tail_small.JPG"
<img src="http://cfry.net/pics/board_top3_small.JPG"

This fin was picked out by the guy working in the shop, his quiote: "it's like it was made exactly for your board."

Getting a custom shaped board made me realize how the master craftsman isn't very common in America any more. However surfboards are still a hand shaped piece of art that you can own for a pretty affordable price.

Today Reed (photo's are courtesy of Reed Foster) and I took the board out at Cowell's beach in Santa Cruz. It was a beautiful day but my board got dinged when some kook ran into it. When my wife saw the board she said it looked like a bowling ball, ouch!

My favorite spot to surf in SC is 41st street, this is the report . Can't wait to take the 'purple haze' out there.

PACIFICA SURF REPORT (For Sunday 10/30)

Good morning, this is Paul with the report for Sunday morning at 7:15 AM.

SURF: 4-5 ft. - shoulder to head high and fair conditions.

AM UPDATE: It's glassy and a bit walled but there are workable sections on the inside.

My friend Reed and I had the perfect day surfing. We got to the beach a little early since it was daylight savings time. It was one of those days surfing that reminds you why you have the addiction. You pull into lindomar and it's bumper to bumper traffic. You look out and the waves are full of surfers. 9 out of 10 times when you hit the beach at lindomar it's gray, rainy, blown out and the waves are closing out. But this Sunday it was 2-4 feet little lefts that Reed and I were eating up. The other Surfers in the water were cheerful and talking about all the cool places to go Surfing. Reed and I still need to schedule our Costa Rica trip. I got waves until my arms felt like jello. We kept going in for our last wave, but going out one more.

What an awesome day.

Report

Went to pacifica. Caught a couple nice waves. Took my longboard and my shortboard. My center fin was broken on my shortboard (don't know when that happened). Surfed with Reed, caught about 10 waves. Mostly close outs, caught a couple nice lefts, had to bail before the wave really sectioned our get buried. I backed out of about 2 5ft waves that would have sent me straight to the bottom of the ocean. Swell has definitely picked up.

SURF

4-7 ft. - shoulder high to 2 ft. overhead and poor-fair conditions.

AM UPDATE: Mostly clean, sectiony walls with a few inside reforms to work with. The tide push should help shape.

I'm going to start keeping a log of my surf sessions and the surfline report for each day so I can refer back to it later. This is my first post along these lines.

There was a slight north wind blowing everyone to the top of lindomar. I got about 10 nice lefts and met a nice woman who was very chatty. She also was a wave monster. She mentioned that Sloat was bigger and cleaner today. Definitely a longboard day, although I had my 7'6 along for the ride. I got out at about 8:30 AM and caught a couple long lefts.
